Fast Fashion is So Last Season

Don't get me wrong - I still fall victim.

To the late-nigh doom-scroll.

To the carts that just sit for weeks with clothes that we all know just sit in your wardrobe you swear you will wear... one day.

To the “just one more” package that arrives like a surprise gift from the universe (except I paid for it, twice if you count the emotional guilt).

We live in a world where it’s easier to order a $10 dress than to recycle a plastic bottle. Where trends last as long as a TikTok soundbite, and clothes are discarded faster than you can say “dopamine dressing.” But what’s the cost of dressing cute if the planet can’t keep up?

Because here's the truth: that top you wore once and posted twice? It might take over 200 years to decompose. And while you’re clicking “Add to Cart,” someone on the other side of the world is working in unsafe conditions, paid barely enough to buy the clothes they’re making for you. The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions—more than international flights and maritime shipping combined. Over 92 million tons of textile waste is generated each year. And that $8 tank top? It might come at the cost of a garment worker’s dignity, often paid less than $3 a day in dangerous conditions to meet our demand for fast, disposable trends.

Slow fashion is not about giving up style—it’s about redefining it. It’s a conscious rebellion against mass production and overconsumption. It means buying less, choosing better, and wearing longer. It’s saying no to 52 micro-seasons a year, and yes to timeless pieces that actually mean something.

It’s choosing brands that disclose who made your clothes, what they’re made of, and where they’ve been. It’s investing in pieces that age with you. A well-tailored coat. The jeans that mold to your body. A vintage silk blouse that still smells like Paris (or at least a really good memory).

As someone with a shopping addiction—and well, I wouldn't say materialistic, but I do love a bit of higher-end fashion (I mean, who doesn’t?)—I get it. But here’s the thing: you can still do all of that. You don’t have to give up your love for fashion to be more conscious about it.

It just means shifting how and where you shop. Support small businesses that handcraft their collections with care. Choose brands that prioritize sustainability. Or dive into secondhand treasures through platforms like Depop, Vestiaire, and The RealReal. You’d be surprised how many gems are out there. Being a conscious shopper isn’t about depriving yourself. It’s about aligning your love for fashion with your values. Because wearing something you actually believe in? That’s a whole new level of stylish.

Slow fashion is sexy—but in a deeper, grown-up way. The kind of sexy that comes with self-respect and a great tailor.

Slow fashion isn’t just a trend—it’s a movement.
